Our Breeder Award System

The GSD Federation presents awards to their Breeders and Youth at the Annual National Breed Show. These systems were designed to increase participation, acknowledge its breeders, and grow our youth involvement. All event points are calculated and accumulated for the year, ending 6 weeks prior the Annual National Breed Show.

Points are awarded to various tests and gradings completed by the dogs bred by a specific breeder, and tally toward Breeders medals and Top 20 awards. The points earned by a specific test or qualification can be found in this document (download to open).

Breeder Medals

A breeder receives a breeder’s medal in recognition of what the breeder’s dogs have achieved. Points are allocated to the breeder based on certain qualifications obtained by the dogs. Points are awarded for V, V(NBS) and VA(SA) show gradings, breed surveys and working qualifications. At least 70% of accumulated points must come from breed related activities and a maximum of 12 training points can be contributed by any individual dog (BH-VT & IAD excluded). These points are accrued over the years that the breeder is involved within the Federation.

The following medals can be awarded:
  • Bronze - 50 points
  • Silver - 100 points
  • Gold - 200 points
  • Platinum - 500 points
  • Diamond - 1000 points

Top Twenty Awards

There are 3 Top Twenty categories:
  • Top Twenty Show Kennels of the Year
Points accumulated by all the progeny bred under a single kennel name.
  • Top Twenty Sires of the Year
Points accumulated by all the progeny of a single sire.
  • Top Twenty Dams of the Year
Points accumulated by all the progeny of a single dam.
Points are earned every time a dog is shown or breed surveyed in an official Federation event. The dog must receive the highest possible grading for its class, except in the case of the national show where the grading V(NBS) is also included. Where one qualification follows another e.g. IGP 1 to IGP 2, or SG to V, the points allocated for each successive qualification are not accumulative and only points for the highest qualification received, e.g. IGP 2 or V, are taken into account for a particular dog. Every time a dog take part in an event, the show points are allocated to the dog’s kennel, and both show and survey points are allocated to its sire and dam.

Junior Handler Awards

All children or youth handling a dog in a show, or participating in a breed or working event will earn points towards their Handler’s Medal. These points are also used in calculating the Top Twenty Handlers of the year. A child handler must be under 14 years of age, and a youth handler under 18 years of age, six weeks before the National Breed Show. Points are also tallied to this date.

Points are allocated to each handler every time they handle a dog in an official event, and the youth handlers are celebrated at our annual National Breed Show. The points earned by a specific test or qualification can be found in this document (download to open).

Youth Handler Medal

Each Child or Youth Handler, irrespective of age group, may qualify for this prestigious medal by accumulating points through their handling careers.
  • Bronze Medal - 150 points
  • Silver Medal - 300 points
  • Gold Medal - 500 points

Top Twenty Youth Handlers of the Year

Similar points are allocated to a handler to rank them for the year. However, no points are awarded for handling in male classes older than 24 months. Safety of our children and youth is paramount and thus handling in these classes is not encouraged. Child and Youth handlers are included together in the Top Twenty Awards.
